I would say the upshot is that at the very least get a second and maybe third opinion before trusting any dentist. Not all are money grubbing evildoers but they don’t all need to be for one of them to destroy your teeth for a new boat. And the sociopaths usually look like everyone else, and are often more charming and reassuring than most people.
I had a bad experience with a root canal. I began having sinus headaches, which got progressively worse over several months, and was even beginning to affect my vision. I went to an ENT specialist, who scoped my sinuses and didn't find anything wrong. He said it's probably the root canalled upper molar I have that's causing the problem. You won't have a toothache since the nerve is gone but it can still cause other problems. I asked how a root canalled tooth could be infected. He looked me in the eye and said emphatically, "They're ALWAYS infected." I had the tooth pulled, and the sinus and vision problems were completely gone in a week.
I too had a dentist tell me I had 16 cavities about 30 years ago, 8 per side. He came recommended (advertised) by 1-800-dentist. I was young and not discerning, never had a cavity up until then. I trusted him and had 8 filled on one side - had so much persistent pain in one tooth that required a subsequent crown for relief (not done with the same dentist). Before I did the other side, I got a second opinion. That dentist said that although she couldn’t vouch for the 8 already filled, her opinion was no cavities on the other side. I complained to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Back then, most of the board was made up of dentists while less than half were regular citizens. There are alternatives to standard root canals now. I made my husband consider alternatives when he was told he needed one. We went with the “Gentle Wave” procedure which is similar but irrigates the root to destroy the bacteria at the root to save it. So far so good.
I was away from home and my dentist and I had a back toothache. I found Dr Watson suggestions and started taking fermented cod liver oil. It helped heal the issue. My tooth is still ok and it actually helped clear a mild depression as well.
Love this. They're all businessmen, no different than mechanics, who cannot be trusted either. I started declining x-rays and saw the true colors very clearly.
Curious what people think of the “new” ultrasound cleaning. I’m seeing in old research that there could be interrupted blood flow and tooth death much later so as not to be connected.

How does the Gentle Wave irrigation process keep bacteria (at root) from entering blood stream?
Not sure on the whole process but I would think it would also be pulling the irrigation out at the same time. You’d have to look it up.
